2017 Healing Justice Alliance Conference

The Healing Justice Alliance Conference is the annual conference of the National Network of Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs (NNHVIP), Cure Violence replication sites, and other health-based approaches to ending urban violence and supporting survivors. We invite you to join public officials, gang intervention workers, doctors, nurses, social workers, service providers, violence interrupters, administrators, researchers, philanthropists, and community members—all committed to interrupting the cycle of violence and providing healing.

Keynote Speaker: Jerry Tello 

Jerry Tello is an internationally recognized authority in family strengthening, therapeutic healing, cross cultural issues and motivational speaking. As a noted therapist, author, performer and program developer, over the last 30 years Mr Tello has incorporated his real life experience, together with research based knowledge and indigenous cultural based teachings to engage all in a reality-based healing and growth-inspiring experience. He is the author of children’s books, professional publications, culturally based curriculums and inspirational CD’s and DVD’s.

Mr Tello has received numerous awards including the Ambassador of Peace award and Presidential Crime Victims Service award.

Keynote Speaker: Thea James

Dr. James is Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, VP of Mission and Associate Chief Medical Officer at Boston Medical Center and Director of the Violence Intervention Advocacy Program there. She is a founding member of the National Network of Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Advocacy Programs. In 2011, Dr. James was appointed to Attorney General Eric Holder’s National Task Force On Children Exposed To Violence. She was the 2014 recipient of the Schwartz Center Compassionate Care Award.

Dr. James’ passion is in Public Health both domestically and globally. She is a Supervising Medical Officer on the Boston Disaster Medical Assistance Team (MA-1 DMAT), under the Department of Health and Human Services. She has deployed to New York City post 911, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Bam, Iran after the earthquake in 2003 and Port-Au-Prince Haiti after the earthquake of 2010.

As the VP of Mission, Dr. James will work closely with the wide range of programs and agencies that partner with BMC to meet the full spectrum of our patients’ needs, with a goal of improving coordination and fostering innovative and effective new models of care. Working with caregivers throughout BMC, she will have primary responsibility for coordinating and maximizing BMC’s relationships and strategic alliances with organizations including community agencies, housing advocates, community mental health providers, as well as substance abuse and violence prevention programs. As essential as these services are to our patients today, integrating them into our clinical care model will be critical as we assume responsibility for managing the health of the population in our system.

Presenter: Dr. David Satcher

Dr. David Satcher served as the 10th Assistant Secretary for Health and 16th surgeon general of the United States under the Clinton Administration. After leaving his post as surgeon general, Dr. Satcher became the director of the National Center for Primary Care at the Morehouse School of Medicine. He stepped in to serve as the president of the medical school two years later. Dr. Satcher created the Satcher Health Leadership Institute in 2006. The institute is part of the Morehouse School of Medicine. He serves as its director, overseeing programs on sexual health, disease prevention, mental health and the health needs of underserved communities. Satcher is also the author of the 2005 clinical guide Multicultural Medicine and Health Disparities.
